JUST UPDATED 2024: JAPAN COMING SOON: New York City / Austin / Los Angeles / San Diego / San Antonio / Houston / Dallas / Shanghai / Singapore / Branson (Missouri) / Western Montana

Hi, welcome to the Bradley family Travel Blog! The point of the blog is to let our family and friends see what we are doing and if they ever go to these places they can choose what to see and what to avoid. We tend to lean toward the more active side - like "leave no stone unturned" so if you want to go at a more leisurely pace, you can just pick and choose. Choose a destination above, on the map, or in the groups on the right hand side of the page.

Happy travels, Phill, Shellie, Bix, Brooke

Japan - Day 8 - Hiroshima & Fukuyama

Japan Day 8 - Hiroshima

We took the train from Otsu to Osaka (which is only 30 miles from Kyoto) and then boarded a bullet train to Hiroshima the site of the first atomic bomb detonation in WWII. We visited the Peace Memorial and Museum with about 10,000 school kids from Japan.

The museum was very crowded, but the exhibits were well done and the overall story was heartbreaking. There was a lot of memorabilia from Hiroshima at the time of and after the bombing and we learned the stories of a lot of victims and survivors.

The message was to learn from and not repeat history.

Hiroshima is a pretty town near the ocean and with mountains surrounding it. There are canals and modern buildings. There's a central shopping street which we drove by. I could see spending more time there - while still a good-sized city it has a smaller city feel.

We took another Shinkansen (bullet train) just one stop north to Fukuyama where we spent the night at the Daiwa Roynet. Our four-bed suite looked out over the train station to the Fukuyama Castle on the other side.

We ate authentic USA burgers and Zima at Boogie Buns, which was a welcome relief from a week of mostly Asian food.

They still have Zima in Japan!
