Today we started out with some breakfast back at Ken's then went a couple of blocks away to Big Island Candies. They make all kinds of candies there - you can buy them at http://www.bigislandcandies.com.
Bix tried his hand at working on the manufacturing line.
Then we headed about 15 miles south to the Puna area and past the town of Pahoa to Lava Trees State Park.
Here the tress were overrun and encased by lava. The picture up above we thought looks like a lion - follow the link to learn more about this park.
Then we went to the natural tide pools in Kapoho. This is a cool place to snorkel and swim in clear ocean water. The pools are separated from the ocean by lava deposits and vary in size and depth. Brooke cut her wrist on the sharp lava though, so this wasn't her favorite spot.
We all liked the man-made ocean pool at Ahalnui. Here's a picture of Bix swimming across the pool with the ocean on the other side. The pool contains ocean water, but is hot in many spots, presumably from volcanic emissions.
Both kids liked the warm and cold spots and liked floating in the pool.
After some lunch at the Black Rock Cafe in Pahoa, we went to try to see lava flowing into the ocean. We didn't feel up for th elong hike from the parking ot the lava flow, but we saw the steam where it was entering the ocean.
We went back to Hilo for the evening...tomorrow back to Waikoloa.
